Sydney Australia

The capital of the Australian state of New South Wales is Sydney. Sydney is New South Wales largest city and is the largest city in Australia. There are around four and a half million residents in the city and it is a very cosmopolitan metropolis with a wide variety of cultures and religions represented.

Sydney was first settled in 1788 with British Soldiers and Convicts transported from London due to overcrowding of the prisons in England at the time. Captain Cook discovered Australia in 1770 and in 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove and settled Sydney as a penal colony.

Sydney sprawls from the natural harbour of Port Jackson(Sydney Harbour), in the East to the foothills of the Great Dividing Range at Katoomba. You will find some wonderful attractions on Sydney Harbour, including The Rocks where the first city grew, the Sydney Opera House, Watsons Bay where you can eat the most gorgeous seafood, Hyde Park Barracks, Darling Harbour, Bondi Beach, Manly Beach, and catch a Sydney Ferry to Taronga Zoo or a River Cat along the Parramatta River. 

In the west you will find gorgeous National Parks, hiking trails and camping facilities while in the city you will find Australia's best night life with Star City Casino, dance clubs, night clubs and gorgeous restaurants with superb views.

By day you can take in the tranquility of the Royal Botanical Gardens, Centennial Park, Lady Macquarie's Chair or just laze on the beach and work on your tan.

Sydney is the third largest city in Asia and is the 22nd largest city in the world. It is one of the World's financial, fashion and tourist hubs. Sydney is ranked in the world's top 10 places to live.

The Sydney Olympic Games were held in the year 2000 and were regarded as the best games ever as people were welcomed from all over the world to enjoy the Australian hospitality, safety and lifestyle. The World Cup final of the Rugby was held in Sydney in 2003.

Economy
Sydney is regarded as the Business Hub of Australia. It is a very wealthy city and is the second wealthiest city in the world on a per capita basis. The main employment sectors are; property, retail, business, manufacturing, medicine and public service, tourism. Sydney is also the IT capital of Australia. The city accounts for 25% of the National GDP.

ASIC (Australian Securities and Investment Commission, Australian Stock Exchange and Reserve Bank of Australia reside in the city. It is also the Bank Headuarters for almost 100 global banks, and over 250 major Australian companies. It is the regional centre for almost five hundred multinational businesses. Some of the major companies that are located in Sydney are Citigroup, HSBC Bank, Fairfax,  Deutsche Bank, Commonwealth Bank, Nestle, IBM, Nike, BHP, Carlton, Macdonalds, KFC, Woolworths, Coles Myer, David Jones, Newscorp, PBL and more. 

Try great shopping malls like Parramatta, Bondi Junction, Ryde, and the Strand, Queen Victoria Building, Pitt Street Mall, George Street, Market Street where my favourite hotel is located - The Swissotel, Castlereagh Street and Chinatown, Westfield Sydney, Mid City Centre, David Jones near Centrepoint Tower.

If you are looking for markets try Chinatown, The Rocks, Paddys Markets, Parramatta Markets. Places like DOuble Bay are great for the luxury conscious and also  Darlinghurst, Potts Point, North Sydney and Chatswood. 

If you like university style shopping try Newtown, Broadway, Glebe and Ultimo. If you are into the beach culture, try Bondi, Manly, Coogee, Bronte and Maroubra or Cronulla.

Over 8 million Australians visit Sydney and 3 million overseas residents every year. Fox Studios Australia is located in the old Sydney Showgrounds and makes many of the top box office films that include smash hits like The Matrix. It is the 16th most expensive city to live in, in the world. The average home costs around $600,000 and the average apartment costs around $450,000. Rents are the most expensive in Australia. Around half of all agricultural products and foods are consumed by Sydneysiders.
