History of Gold Coast Captain James Cook was the first to make notes on the area as he sailed the coast on 16 May 1770 in HM Bark Endeavour.

An explorer by the name of Matthew Flinders, was engaged to chart the continent north of  the colony of New South Wales. He travelled past the area in 1802. The Gold Coast area was mostly uninhabited by Europeans up until 1823.  The famous Australian explorer John Oxley landed at Mermaid Beach which he named after his ship, a small cutter named The Mermaid.

Many pioneers were attracted to the Gold Coast Hinterland's large supply of red cedar trees in mid Nineteenth century. Nerang was used as a base for the timber industry and then in 1875, Southport was surveyed and soon became a hidden holiday destination for Brisbane high society.

The Tourism Industry burgeoned from 1925 when Jim Cavill built the Surfers Paradise Hotel which is located where the Hard Rock cafe is now located. As tourism grew so did the population in order to service the tourists. By the 1940s with property prices surging journalists began to call the area the "Gold Coast." In 1958 the area was officially called the Gold Coast and extended from Southport in Queensland to Coolangatta in New South Wales.

Throughout the 1970s, developers of real estate began to be a force in local politics pressuring for high rises which soon began to dominate Surfers Paradise. In 1981 the Gold Coast Airport was established at Coolangatta.
