About Brisbane Australia
Brisbane is the largest city in Queensland and the capital of that state. Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia. The population of Brisbane in excess of 2 million. Residents of Brisbane are called Brisbanites.
The Brisbane CBD is situated on the bend of the Brisbane River and is around 23 kms from the mouth of the Brisbane River at Moreton Bay. The city is a very sprawling metropolis and extends from Moreton Bay to the Great Dividing Range.
Brisbane was called after the Brisbane River which was named in honour of Sir Thomas Brisbane who was the Governor of NSW between 1821 and 1825. Brisbane was originally a penal settlement which was first at Redcliffe approximately 28 kms north of the centre of Brisbane. Brisbane was selected as Queensland's capital and became a separate Australian colony in 1859.
Brisbane was the headquarters for General Douglas MacArthur and was the Allied World War II South West Pacific headquarters. Brisbane was chosen as the holder of the 1982 Commonwealth Games, The Goodwill Games in 2001 and The World Expo 1988. Brisbane is ranked as the 16th most livable city in the world.
The original inhabitants of Brisbane were the Turrbal and Jagera people. Moreton Bay was initially explored by the Australian explorer Matthew Flinders. In 1799, Matthew Flinders disembarked at Woody Point, which he named Red Cliff Point because of the large cliffs that were red-coloured and were visible from Moreton Bay. In 1823, Thomas Brisbane, The Governor of New South Wales, decided that the penal settlement be developed and John oxley led an exploration party in the area. Oxley explored the Brisbane River to Goodna, 20 km upstream from Brisbane CBD. Red Cliff Point was selected as an ideal site for the new colony because ships could navigate and land on all tides and get in close proximity to shore.
Annual events
The major events in Brisbane cultural calendar include the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka), which is held every August, the Riverfestival which is held in September on the banks of the Brisbane River, Warana which is the aboriginal word for Blue Skies which is a biennial festival. The Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) in July and August. The Paniyiri festival is held at Musgrave Park and is a yearly Greek cultural festival . There is also the Brisbane Medieval Fayre & Tournament which is held in June. The Valley Fiesta is 3 day event held by the Valley Chamber of Commerce featuring live music, food and market stalls and entertainment. The Bridge to Brisbane is a fun run which is a major charity event for Brisbane each year.
